Parlay Privacy Policy
Effective Date: October 31, 2026
General
Parlay (“Parlay”, “we” or “us”) is operated by Language House LLC. Parlay is a Spanish learning service that students use in a web browser at learn.parlaylabs.studio and in the Parlay app for iPhone. Together these are the “Application”, and with the services provided through them, the “Service”. This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) describes what information we collect, how we use it, and who can see it.
Parlay reaches students in two ways:
- Through a School. Schools, districts and other educational institutions (each, a “School”) provide Parlay to their students. The School decides which students use it and what happens to their information, and we handle that information on the School's behalf and on its instructions.
- Directly. A learner may also use Parlay through a paid subscription. We create the learner's account at their request, and the learner decides about their own information. Payments are handled by our payment provider, Stripe. We never see or store card numbers. Direct subscriptions are for learners 18 or older; younger learners use Parlay through a School.
Where this Policy gives a School a choice or a right, a learner who uses Parlay directly has that same choice or right over their own information.
This Policy covers both the web application and the iPhone app. Your use of the Service is also governed by the Parlay Terms and Conditions.
Information We Collect
Account Information. A student who uses Parlay through a School has an account created by the School, or by us on the School's behalf. A learner who subscribes directly has an account created by us at their request. There is no way to sign up without one of these. Students sign in with Google, with a one-time code sent to their email address, or, on the iPhone, with Apple; sign-in is handled by our identity provider. From sign-in we receive the student's name and email address. We never receive a password, and we have no access to the student's email, files, or any other content in those accounts. We do not ask for a home address, a telephone number, a date of birth, or a photograph.
Payment Information. Students who use Parlay through a School make no purchases. A learner who subscribes directly pays through our payment provider, Stripe. We receive whether the subscription is active and the email address it was made with. We never see or store card numbers.
Schoolwork and Progress. When a student uses the Service we record the work assigned to them and how they did: their answers, scores, attempts, and progress through a unit. The teachers responsible for that student use this to see how the student is getting on.
Speech Recognition. When a student records a spoken answer, it is turned into text, and only that text is used by the activity. How it is turned into text depends on the device:
- The Parlay iPhone app. On the iPhone itself, by Apple's speech recognition using a Spanish language model downloaded to the phone. The audio does not leave the iPhone.
- Parlay in a web browser on a computer or Chromebook. By the speech recognition built into the browser. To produce the text, the browser sends the audio to its maker's speech service, only while Parlay is listening for an answer: Google Chrome to Google, Microsoft Edge to Microsoft, and Apple Safari to Apple, which may instead process it on the computer. The browser maker handles that audio under its own terms and privacy policy, not under an agreement with us, and we have no control over whether it retains the audio. The browser maker may be able to associate it with any account the student is signed into in that browser.
- Parlay in a web browser on a phone or tablet. The audio is streamed through our servers to Deepgram, our speech recognition provider, which returns the text. If that does not work, the device's own speech recognition is used instead. We instruct Deepgram not to use the audio to train or improve its models.
- Server transcription. If a student's browser cannot recognise their speech, we may switch on server transcription for that student, and the microphone check can test it. The audio is then sent through our servers to Google's Gemini service, which returns the text.
In every case, we do not store the audio, and no person at Parlay listens to it. We do not use voice recordings for any purpose, including the development of voice cloning or speaker identification technology.
AI Features and Input. Some activities use artificial intelligence to evaluate an answer, give feedback, or hold a guided conversation. When a student uses one of these activities, the text of what they said or typed, together with the question being answered or the earlier turns of the conversation, is sent to a third-party AI provider solely to generate the response the student hears or reads. The providers we currently use for this are OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. We do not send the student's name, email address, School, or any account identifier to these providers, and we never send them the student's recorded voice. We retain the resulting transcripts as part of the student's schoolwork, so that a teacher can review it and a conversation can resume where it left off.
Technical Information. Our servers record standard technical information about requests made by the Application (the application version, the time of the request, the network address it came from, and any errors) so that we can keep the Service working and investigate faults.
Crash Reports (iPhone app). When the iPhone app crashes or hits an error, it sends a report to Sentry, our error-monitoring provider. A report contains technical details of the fault and a coded account number, never the student's name, email address, or network address.
No Analytics and No Tracking. Apart from the crash reports above, the Application contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking software of any kind. It uses cookies and device storage only to keep a student signed in and to remember display settings. Watch and Learn videos play in YouTube's own video player, which YouTube operates under its own privacy policy and which may set its own cookies.
Information Stored on the Student's Device. After a student signs in, the Application keeps their sign-in on that device (in the browser's storage, or the iPhone's secure storage) so they stay signed in. It is removed when they sign out. The iPhone app also keeps the lesson audio it downloads, so that it plays without delay.
How We Process This Information
Providing the Service. We use the information described above to deliver assigned work to the right student, to evaluate practice, to make progress available to the student's teachers, to keep a student signed in, to manage a direct learner's subscription, and to keep the Service secure and working properly.
Service Providers. We share information with the providers who help us run the Service: our hosting provider, Amazon Web Services; the identity provider that handles sign-in; the AI providers named above; Deepgram and Google for speech recognition, as described above; Stripe, for direct learners' payments; and Sentry, for the iPhone app's crash reports. Each processes information on our instructions, for the purpose of delivering the Service and for no purpose of its own. A browser maker's speech recognition, and YouTube's video player, are not among these providers: they work under their own terms and privacy policies, and the commitments in this Policy bind us and do not bind them.
Communicating with Schools and Learners. We contact the School, or a learner who uses Parlay directly, about the Service: support, faults, changes to the Application, and anything affecting the student. Stripe sends a direct learner their payment receipts and renewal reminders. We do not send marketing messages to students.
Complying with Law. We may process or disclose information where necessary to comply with a legal obligation, such as a subpoena or court order, or where we believe it is necessary to prevent imminent harm to any person. Where the law allows it, we will tell the School first.
What We Do Not Do
Some of what matters most is what we do not do with student information. We do not:
- sell, rent, or trade it;
- use it to train artificial intelligence models, our own or anyone else's, whether it identifies a student or has been de-identified;
- display advertising of any kind, or use it for advertising, marketing, or tracking students across other websites or applications;
- build a profile of a student for any purpose other than that student's own learning within the Service;
- use it for product research or improvement beyond keeping the Service working correctly for the School or learner; or
- show students links to advertisers or to third-party websites, other than the YouTube videos that teachers choose for Watch and Learn, which play in YouTube's player and can be opened on YouTube.
Who Can See a Student's Information
No part of a student's profile, work, or progress is public. The Service has no public profiles, no directory, no social features, no messaging between students, and no means by which one student's work can be viewed by another student.
A student's information is visible only to the student themselves; to the teachers and administrators at the student's own School who are responsible for that student, or, for a learner who uses Parlay directly, to the Parlay teachers assigned to them; and to those of our personnel whose duties require access. Each School's data is kept separate from that of every other School, and nothing is published.
Student Users
Parlay is used in two ways:
- Through a School, by middle school and high school students. Only the School, or we on the School's behalf, can create these accounts. The School decides which students use Parlay and what becomes of their information. A parent with a question about their child's information should raise it with the School, which will bring it to us.
- Directly, by learners 18 or older, through a paid subscription. We create the account at the learner's request. A learner under 18 uses Parlay only through a School.
There is no way for anyone to create an account on their own from the Application.
School, Parent and Learner Requests
On the School's written request, or a direct learner's request about their own account, we will, within thirty (30) days:
- say what information we hold about the student;
- provide a copy of it in a usable format;
- correct anything identified as inaccurate;
- delete the student's information; or
- suspend or remove an account.
For students who use Parlay through a School, we act on these requests through the School rather than directly with students or parents, so that the School keeps control of its own records. Requests may be sent to hello@parlaylabs.studio with the subject line “Privacy”.
Deleting an account from the Application. Any student can also delete their own account from the profile menu. This removes the account and the student's work immediately, and it cannot be undone. A direct learner's subscription is cancelled first; the record of past payments is kept, because we are required to keep financial records.
Data Retention
We retain student information only for as long as is reasonably necessary to provide the Service:
- Account information and schoolwork: retained while the account is in use (for a School's students, for the duration of the School's agreement with us, so that teachers can review a student's progress across the school year), and deleted or irreversibly de-identified within sixty (60) days after the account is removed or that agreement ends. An account deleted from the Application is removed at once.
- Audio recordings: none are retained. Audio sent through our servers for speech recognition is passed on and not stored, and we instruct Deepgram not to use it to train its models.
- Technical information and crash reports: retained for no more than ninety (90) days.
- Backups: copies within routine backups are overwritten on our ordinary cycle within ninety (90) days, and are not accessed for any purpose in the meantime.
- Payment records: a direct learner's payment records are kept by Stripe and by us for as long as the law requires us to keep financial records. They contain no schoolwork.
A School, or a direct learner for their own account, may require earlier deletion at any time. When a School stops using the Service, it may request an export of its data within thirty (30) days, after which the deletion above applies.
Information Security
We protect student information using measures appropriate to its sensitivity, including encryption of student information in transit and at rest, access restricted to those personnel whose duties require it, logical separation of each School's data from that of every other School, and diligence on the service providers who process student information on our behalf.
In the event of a breach of security affecting a student's information, we will notify the School, or the learner who uses Parlay directly, without undue delay, describe the nature of the incident and the steps we are taking, and support the School in meeting its own notification obligations.
Geographic Restrictions
Parlay is based in the State of Texas in the United States, and stores its data in the United States. The Service is provided for use by Schools and learners located in the United States.
Privacy Policy Updates
We may update this Policy to reflect changes in our practices. Where a change materially affects a School or its students, we will notify the School before it takes effect. Where a change materially affects learners who use Parlay directly, we will notify them by email before it takes effect. In either case we will update the effective date at the top of this page.
